The cold wave conditions across Jammu and Kashmir persisted on Thursday despite higher reaches receiving fresh snowfall on New Year’s Eve.

The plains across Jammu and Kashmir continue to witness cold and dry weather conditions after a brief spell of rainfall recorded on December 20–21.

While the MeT Department had predicted rain and snowfall over scattered places in the UT starting from December 30, so far, no rainfall or snowfall has occurred at most weather stations.

Parts of the higher reaches in the Kashmir Valley received the season’s first snowfall on December 20–21, followed by another spell on December 30.

According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded a slight improvement on Wednesday night, with a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius, whereas similar weather conditions were recorded at the Srinagar International Airport on Tuesday.”

“There is a possibility of further rain and snowfall at scattered places across the Kashmir Valley over the next 48 hours,” it said. There are fair chances of light rain or snow at many places and moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of north and central Kashmir on January 1, they added.

Jammu city remained the warmest place, with minimum temperatures hovering above 10 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg emerged as the coldest location, with minus 5.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night.

The Valley’s main tourist destinations, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, are witnessing a heavy rush of tourists following the recent snowfall.

The Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy weather, with dry conditions expected to return after January 2.

The recent rain and snowfall ended a month-long dry period in Kashmir, which had also been reflected in several water bodies, showing an increase in water levels following the snowfall recorded on December 20–21.
