The administration of the Itanagar Capital Region in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday banned the commercial slaughter of mithuns and warned of penalties for violations.
The order was issued by Itanagar Capital Region Deputy Commissioner Toko Babu citing provisions of the Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1989, and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
Babu, who also serves as chairperson of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), said violators would face a fine of Rs 20,000 for any illegal
slaughter of mithuns.
The administration has appointed the APMC vice-chairperson to lead a monitoring team tasked with checking illegal slaughter activities in the region.
The deputy commissioner also directed the superintendents of police of Itanagar and Naharlagun to deploy personnel whenever required by APMC members for enforcement of the order.

The mithun, also known as the gayal, is the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh and holds deep cultural and traditional significance among several tribal communities in the Northeast.
In a separate order, the Itanagar Municipal Corporation directed the immediate removal of meat, fruit and vegetable stalls operating along the NH-415 stretch within the city.
The civic body said the roadside stalls were causing traffic congestion and posing risks to public health.
Shopkeepers and vendors have been instructed to remove their temporary structures within 10 days, failing which action would be initiated by the authorities.
The move is part of a broader drive by the local administration to regulate roadside commercial activities and improve traffic movement and sanitation in the state capital region.
