Bibi Gurdial Kaur Khangura, a prominent Congress leader and mother of senior Congress leader and former legislator from Qila Raipur, Jasbir Singh ‘Jassi’ Khangura, passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness. She was 90.
The cremation will be performed on December 10 (1 pm) and bhog will be held on December 12 (1 pm) at her native village, Latala.
She is survived by her husband, Jagpal Singh Khangura, and two sons, Jassi and Satti Khangura.
Bibi Gurdial Kaur Khangura had migrated to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. She returned to India in the early 2000s to serve the people here. She contested as a Congress candidate in the 2002 assembly elections from Qila Raipur.
Although she put up a strong fight in the Akali stronghold, she lost by a slim margin of just a few thousand votes. Her son, Jassi Khangura, eventually wrested the seat from the Akalis in the next elections held in 2007.
She remained active in the social and political life of Ludhiana and also served as a trustee of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust between 2002 and 2007.
Leaders cutting across party lines have expressed grief over her demise and conveyed their condolences to Jassi Khangura and the family.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring condoled her death and expressed his sympathies to the bereaved family. In a message to the Khangura family, he said he felt it as a personal loss, adding that Bibi Ji was a motherly figure to him.
