A shooting incident which involved the nephew of senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil has taken a darker turn, as Ahmedabad police now believe the incident was an intentional murder-suicide rather than an accident. Yashkumarsinh Gohil, a 35-year-old officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board, reportedly shot his wife, Rajeshwari, before turning the gun on himself at their Bodakdev residence on Wednesday night.
While early reports suggested the first shot might have been a mishap, an FIR registered on Saturday at the Vastrapur police station paints a different picture. Investigators found that the bullet struck 30-year-old Rajeshwari from behind, hitting her in the head. Forensics, further, noted that the licensed revolver used in the shooting requires a specific force and intent to fire, which rules out the theory of a hair-trigger accident.
The sequence of events detailed in the FIR is particularly also chilling. After shooting his wife, Yashkumarsinh reportedly called a 108 ambulance. It was only after the arriving medical team declared Rajeshwari dead on the scene that he pulled the trigger a second time, ending his own life in the same room. The fact that the weapon held only two rounds and both were used in this manner has further convinced authorities of his intent.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayesh Brahmbhatt confirmed that the case is now being treated as a murder investigation, though the motive remains a mystery. The couple had recently got married, and friends and family are reportedly reeling from the news. Detectives are at present looking into the couple's personal history and mobile records to understand what could have led to such a violent conclusion.
