Yashraj Gohil reportedly shot his wife, Rajeshwari Jadeja, with a licensed firearm before turning the weapon on himself at their Ahmedabad residence.

Yashraj Gohil, 33, nephew of Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil, allegedly shot his wife, Rajeshwari Jadeja, before turning the weapon on himself in a suspected murder-suicide on Tuesday night, police said.

The couple, originally from Bhavnagar, had moved to Ahmedabad after their marriage two months ago. Both were remarried, the police added.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred after the couple returned home from dinner. Yashraj, a Gujarat Maritime Board officer, reportedly used a licensed firearm kept in the residence to fatally shoot Rajeshwari, 30, in the back of the head. Emergency medical personnel confirmed her death at the scene. Shortly afterwards, Yashraj used the same weapon to end his life, also suffering a fatal gunshot to the head.

“The deaths were reported to us late Tuesday night. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The firearm is licensed, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to this tragedy,” said a police official.

Authorities are examining factors that may have contributed to the incident, including family and domestic circumstances. Police have launched a full inquiry to establish why the firearm was kept at the residence and are collecting witness statements.

“The investigation will also determine whether there were any warning signs or prior incidents that may have prevented this outcome,” the official added.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Ahmedabad community and political circles. Shaktisinh Gohil, a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, is yet to comment publicly.

Cases of domestic violence and misuse of licensed firearms have increasingly come under scrutiny in Gujarat. Officials highlighted that stringent regulations govern firearm ownership, but lapses in storage and safety can have fatal consequences.

Police urged residents to report any potential threats or domestic disputes and emphasised that counselling and legal support are available for families facing similar situations.

The bodies of the couple were taken to a local hospital for post-mortem, and further updates on the investigation are expected in the coming days.
