Chandigarh Police has issued a public notice banning protests and gatherings at places other than the designated venue. The move comes as the Haryana Congress has announced a protest on the issue of MGNREGA on Wednesday.
As per the notice issued by the Station House Officer of Police Station North, Sector-25 Rally Ground has been marked as the only approved venue for rallies, processions, dharnas and public meetings in the city.
The order was issued by the District Magistrate under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. It states that gathering of five or more people for protests, rallies, strikes or public speeches is banned across the Union Territory, except at the designated ground.
The notice has been pasted outside the Haryana Congress office in Chandigarh. The party has announced that it will hold a protest over MGNREGA and march from its headquarters to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha at 12 noon on Wednesday. It has also said it will gherao the Assembly. The administration has remained on alert in view of the planned protest.
Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday closed a suo motu case related to a traffic jam near the High Court roundabout. The case was disposed of after Chandigarh Director General of Police Dr Sagar Preet Singh Hooda assured the court that proper steps would be taken to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
Separately, the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee has announced a “Vidhan Sabha Gherao” under the banner of MNREGA Bachao Sangharsh at 11 am today. The protest is aimed at raising issues of unemployment, law and order and what the party calls anti-people policies of the state government.
Organisers have appealed to party workers, supporters and the general public to join the demonstration. They said the protest will highlight concerns over recent changes to the rural employment guarantee scheme and other governance issues.
In a post on X, the party said the gathering would reflect the people’s resolve for change. It urged people to raise their democratic voice against injustice, unemployment and anti-people policies by joining the Haryana Vidhan Sabha gherao.
