Congress spreading myths on UCC, ignores constitution: Dhami

Regarding the opposition to mandatory registration of live-in relationships under UCC, Dhami said this rule is meant to protect partners in such relationships.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday accused the Congress of spreading false information about the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He claimed that Congress does not believe in the Constitution and supports crimes against women.

Regarding the opposition to mandatory registration of live-in relationships under UCC, Dhami said this rule is meant to protect partners in such relationships. Congress strongly opposes this provision, saying it violates privacy rights.

At a press conference in the state assembly, Dhami explained that registering live-in relationships would help authorities and parents stay informed. He pointed out that many such relationships become abusive or violent. He cited the case of Shraddha Walkar, who was brutally murdered by her live-in partner Aftab. Dhami said that keeping official records of live-in relationships could help prevent such crimes.

He accused Congress of misleading people about UCC because it does not believe in B.R. Ambedkar’s Constitution and wants to shield those who commit crimes against women.

Another false claim, according to Dhami, is that a man from outside Uttarakhand will get the rights of an original inhabitant if he marries a local girl. He dismissed this as a baseless rumor.

Dhami emphasised that the UCC was drafted after consulting a wide range of people, including all political parties, but Congress still opposed it.

He credited the people of Uttarakhand for making it the first state in independent India to implement UCC. He reminded that BJP had promised UCC before the 2022 elections, won with a historic mandate, and fulfilled that commitment.

He also highlighted the recent urban local body elections, where Congress failed to win any mayoral seats. Congress had called the elections a "semifinal" for the 2027 assembly polls, but the people have already rejected them, Dhami said.
