The ruling Congress in Telangana continued its winning streak, bagging a majority of the municipalities for which the elections were held on February 11. The main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which put up a reasonable performance, was in the second position while the BJP remained a marginal player.
The polls were held in 2,569 wards in 116 municipalities and 412 wards in seven municipal corporations. The polling witnessed a decent 74 per cent voter turnout.
Out of the 2,836 wards whose results were declared by the State Election Commission (SEC) till late evening, Congress candidates won 1,490, followed by BRS 759 and BJP 277. The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul (AIMIM) bagged 54 wards, while independents captured 171 wards.

The elected councillors and corporators will be sworn in at 11.30 a.m. on February 16. Following this, a special meeting will be held to elect mayor and deputy mayor of the corporations and chairperson and vice-chairperson of municipalities.
The municipal victory came as a boost for the Congress as it came close on the heels of a decisive win in the elections to the rural local bodies. It demonstrates that the popularity of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is intact and that the performance of his government has wide public support.
Elections for three other corporations, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and five municipalities, will be held later as the council term is in vogue
