In a major security lapse at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, Jharkhand, a convicted Maoist named Sameer Tirkey, serving a 10-year rigorous imprisonment for murder, escaped on Thursday evening.
Jail authorities filed an FIR at Khelgaon Police Station on Friday evening after discovering the escape during a routine inmate headcount that morning. Authorities immediately alerted the police and launched a search operation.
Tirkey had been in custody since 2018 following his arrest in a murder case. "When the prisoner attendance was conducted on Friday morning, the jail administration realized that Sameer Tirkey was missing. Multiple teams have been mobilised to track down the fugitive," said a jail source.

Jharkhand Jail IG Sudarshan Mandal confirmed the escape and stated that efforts were underway to apprehend him.
“Search operations are being carried out in coordination with Ranchi Police. The exact circumstances under which Sameer Tirkey, who was jailed for murder, managed to flee are still being investigated,” Mandal said.
Sources indicate that Tirkey, a resident of Gumla district, was linked to a Maoist organization and was arrested by Gumla Police in 2018. Initial findings suggest he escaped around 7:00 pm on Thursday. Further investigations are ongoing.
