A 28-year-old woman in Gurugram has filed a complaint alleging that her family tried to force her into a marriage she did not want and kept her confined at home. She sent an email to the Women’s Commission and also marked it to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the Deputy Commissioner, the Police
Commissioner and other officials, after which the police stepped in.
The police registered an FIR against her parents and other relatives. Police later rescued her from the house and moved her to a safe house. Her family, however, claimed that she had been “misled”.
Police said the woman is the daughter of a BJP councillor living in Gurugram’s Sector 9. She was supposed to get married on December 4 to a man from Daulatabad village. A day before the wedding, she emailed the authorities saying she was being held against her will.
In the complaint, she said she has MBA, B.Ed and M.Ed degrees and has been in a relationship with a friend for 15 years, whom she wants to marry. She said she had already told her parents she did not want the arranged marriage, but they continued to pressure her. When she refused, she was allegedly locked in a room and her phone was taken away. She said she had been confined for several days, and wedding preparations continued despite her objections. She also alleged that family members threatened her life.
Police reached the councillor’s home after receiving her email and rescued her. An FIR was registered under Sections 127(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Sector 9 police station.
“After the complaint, we registered an FIR and moved the woman to a safe house. The investigation is ongoing,” said Inspector Sunil Kumar, SHO of Sector 9 police station.
