A couple was killed and two others were injured after a vehicle went out of control and plunged nearly 150 feet into a deep gorge in Hamirpur district on Monday morning, police said.
The accident took place on the link road connecting Kheri and Dhabriyana villages in the Barsar subdivision of Himachal Pradesh.
All four occupants of the car were travelling to attend a family function at a relative’s house. Ramesh Chand (74) lost his life on the spot due to severe injuries, while his wife Santosh Kumari (69) succumbed during treatment at a hospital.
Prithvi Chand (64), who was driving the vehicle, and his wife Saroj Kumari (59) sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment. Ramesh Chand was the brother-in-law of Prithvi Chand.
Eyewitnesses said the accident took place near a water tank between Dhabriyana and Kheri when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The car rolled down the steep gorge and was badly damaged on impact.
Local villagers rushed to the spot immediately and began rescue efforts. Police and district administration teams soon reached the site. With the help of residents, the injured persons were pulled out after a difficult rescue operation and shifted to a nearby hospital.
Saroj Kumari, who suffered critical injuries, was later referred to the District Hospital in Hamirpur. DSP Barsar Lalman Sharma said a case has been registered and police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Barsar Swati Dogra said immediate relief assistance of Rs 25,000 each has been provided to the families of the deceased.
