The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Kamrup district on Monday directed the unfreezing of bank accounts belonging to festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg.
The court held that the provisions of Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were not applicable under the present circumstances and therefore did not justify the freezing of the accounts.
In a separate order, the court directed another accused, Siddhartha Sharma, to deposit Rs 16 lakh with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police. The direction came after investigators sealed his flat as part of the ongoing probe.
The orders were issued during proceedings related to the high-profile investigation into Garg’s death, which is being handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the CID.
In December 2025, the SIT filed a detailed chargesheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati following an extensive probe into the singer’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Garg had reportedly died during a sea outing while visiting the country to attend the North East India Festival.
Sources said the chargesheet runs into several thousand pages. The voluminous document was prepared following large-scale evidence collection and examination of witnesses.
Seven individuals have been named as accused in the case. Murder charges have been framed against four of them — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, band member Shekharjyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta.
Garg’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police officer, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Other accused, including the singer’s personal security personnel, have been booked for allied offences such as criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.
Investigators stated that the SIT’s chargesheet is supported by testimony from over 300 witnesses, along with documentary records and forensic evidence, all of which have been placed before the court as part of the prosecution’s case.
