The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday asked the Union government and the Punjab government to carry out a fresh threat assessment of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The court also asked them to submit a comprehensive report in a sealed cover.

The Bench said the report must be prepared after proper consultation between the Punjab Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP). Till the next date of hearing, the state government has been told to ensure adequate security for Majithia.

During the hearing, the Punjab government told the high court that 15 police personnel were presently deployed for Majithia’s security. However, the Bench asked if a fresh threat perception assessment had been conducted after his recent release.

As the state failed to give specific details about any updated security review, the High Court ordered both the Central and Punjab governments to reassess the threat perception. They have been asked to submit their findings before the next hearing. The case has been listed for further hearing on March 6.
