Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday carried out a special district-wide inspection of SIM card vendors in Budgam to prevent the misuse of SIM cards and mobile communication services, officials said.
Police teams conducted simultaneous checks at multiple locations across the district. The inspection aimed to verify Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance and scrutinise the documents used during the issuance of SIM cards by vendors.
This was done to make sure no SIM card was acquired and activated without valid identification and proof of address.
During the drive, vendors were sensitised about their vital role in preventing the misuse of mobile networks for unlawful activities. The vendors were instructed to adhere to KYC guidelines and were also warned of stringent legal action, including license cancellation and prosecution, in case of any violation or negligence.
Meanwhile, the police also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, fake documentation, or irregularities related to SIM card issuance.
Authorities said such drives would be conducted regularly to ensure a secure and accountable communication environment across Budgam district.
Jammu and Kashmir Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy against the misuse of communication services in the UT.
