The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the annual Darbar offices to shift back official operations from Jammu to Srinagar for the 2026 summer season. According to an order dated April 15, the offices are likely to resume their official work in Srinagar on May 4.
The order stated that offices observing a five-day work week in Jammu will shut on April 30 after official working hours, while offices having a six-day week will close on May 2 before reopening in Srinagar on May 4.
The order further states that only 33 per cent of staff strength or a maximum of ten officials, whichever is less, will move to the camp. To ensure hassle-free travel, the convoys will be accompanied by cranes and other logistical support systems, escorted by teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Besides, healthcare facilities will be set up along the entire route at Jhajjar Kotli, Udhampur, Chenani, Ramban, Ramsu, Banihal and Qazigund. The Health and Medical Education Department has been tasked with issuing the necessary instructions. Employees have been directed not to occupy government or municipal accommodations without proper allotment.
A uniform Special Move Travelling Allowance of Rs 25,000 has been sanctioned for employees shifting within the stipulated timeframe, while advance salary for April will be drawn on April 29. No leave will be granted during this period except under special conditions or emergencies, the order reads.
The administrative practice dates back to 1872, when Maharaja Ranbir Singh of the former princely state initiated the shifting of the royal court between Srinagar and Jammu to counter extreme weather conditions in both regions.
