The decomposed body of a missing IT professional was recovered from a guest house in Newtown late early on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Chandranath Mukherjee, 34, a resident of Shyamnagar, North 24 Parganas, who had been missing since October 2.

According to police sources, Chandranath worked for an IT company in Kolkata. After he went missing, his family lodged a missing person complaint at the Noapara Police Station. “Acting on the complaint, we tracked his mobile phone’s last location, which led us to the guest house,” said a police officer.

When officers reached the spot, they reportedly noticed a foul odour coming from one of the rooms. Upon breaking open the door, the police found Chandranath’s body in a decomposed state.

Investigators also recovered several sleeping pills from near the body. However, the police are yet to confirm whether it was a case of suicide or foul play. “We are probing all possible angles,” said the officer, adding, “The presence of sleeping pills raises several questions — how he obtained them and whether he consumed them voluntarily.”

The police have begun examining CCTV footage from the guest house and surrounding areas to determine who last entered or exited the room. The guest house records are also being checked to confirm who booked the room and under what identity.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, which officials say will help establish the exact cause and time of death. “A clear idea about the cause of death will be available only after the autopsy and forensic reports are received,” an investigating officer stated.

The police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Security and law enforcement officials have assured that legal steps are being taken and further inquiries will be conducted if new evidence emerges.
