Delhi cafe owner's suicide note: 'Tortured by wife, in-laws'

Puneet Khurana explained that a mutual consent divorce had turned into a contentious conflict with his wife and in-laws.

News Arena Network - Delhi - UPDATED: January 2, 2025, 08:23 PM - 2 min read

Puneet Khurana and Manika Pahwa married in 2016.

Delhi-based cafe owner Puneet Khurana, 40, died by suicide on December 31, leaving behind video statements accusing his wife, Manika Pahwa, and her family of harassment and financial demands. The incident occurred in the Model Town area, and police are investigating the case.

Allegations of harassment

In the video, Puneet said ongoing divorce proceedings with mutual consent had turned into a bitter conflict. He claimed his wife and in-laws imposed unreasonable demands, including Rs 10 lakh, which he could not afford.

"I am extremely tortured by my wife and her family. They are pressuring me with new conditions that are beyond my capacity. I have already paid enough and cannot ask my parents for more," Puneet said in his recording.

Puneet’s family accused Manika and her relatives of consistent mental torture. His sister alleged they also hacked his social media accounts to harass him further. Puneet’s mother stated that he suffered in silence to protect his family from additional stress.

Timeline of events

On December 30, Puneet and Manika had a heated phone conversation, now part of the investigation.

The call included arguments about their shared bakery business, "For God’s Cake," and property issues. Manika was heard using derogatory language and accusing Puneet of ruining her life.

On December 31, the Delhi Police found Puneet unresponsive in his home. A mark around his neck indicated he died by hanging. Police seized his phone containing the video statements and call recordings as evidence.

History of marital discord

Puneet and Manika married in 2016 and initially ran the popular Woodbox Cafe together. Their relationship deteriorated within two years, leading to divorce proceedings. Puneet’s family alleges Manika repeatedly threatened legal action if her demands were not met.

Days before Puneet’s death, Manika posted on social media about surviving "toxicity and narcissistic abuse," calling her alleged abusers "insecure cowards." Puneet’s family claims these posts were a deliberate attempt to frame herself as a victim and divert attention from her actions.

Police investigation

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhisham Singh confirmed an inquiry is underway. Statements from both families are being recorded, and forensic analysis of call recordings, CCTV footage, and Puneet’s phone is ongoing.

Manika’s family has made counter-allegations, and the investigation will also examine financial transactions and property disputes central to the case.

Similar incidents highlight a broader issue

Puneet’s suicide is not an isolated case. Last month, Bengaluru tech executive Atul Subhash died by suicide, leaving a note accusing his wife and her family of harassment. His allegations led to the arrest of his wife and her relatives.

This tragic incident highlights the urgent need to address marital harassment and ensure justice for victims and their families.
