The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed jailed Member of Parliament Sheikh Engineer Rashid to visit his ailing father on humanitarian grounds under strict police escort.
The court allowed the MP to visit his father after multiple pleas were filed by Rashid and his associates, while the Awami Ittehad Party also raised the issue on several media platforms.
Officials said the bench took note of the critical health condition of the parliamentarian’s father and permitted him to visit. However, it also directed authorities to ensure full security during his movement and stay at the hospital.
The court further mentioned that the visit must take place in a time-bound manner under proper supervision of security officials. The MP had earlier filed a plea seeking temporary relief to meet his father, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS.
Engineer Rashid is currently in jail after his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a 2017 terror-funding case. He has been lodged in Tihar Jail since August 2019.
Rashid won the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, defeating Omar Abdullah by a margin of more than 200,000 votes and later took oath as a MP.
