Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday, September 21, announced the launch of an online portal through which residents can register for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Under the Delhi government’s initiative, the full cost of installing rooftop solar panels with a capacity of up to 3 kW will be covered by the government.
The scheme will provide solar panels for 2.25 lakh homes across the national capital. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Gupta described the programme as a significant move towards expanding green energy in Delhi and said it would directly benefit residents. She also termed it a major achievement of the “double-engine” government in Delhi led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Emphasising the difference between the present administration and earlier governments, the Chief Minister said the previous governments followed the “politics of freebies”, while the current government was focused on the “politics of development”.
She said the solar initiative would help generate green energy in the capital and confirmed that consumers would not have to pay any amount for installing systems of up to 3 kW capacity. The installation, she added, would be provided at zero cost to eligible beneficiaries.
The dedicated portal is now open for eligible residents of Delhi to submit their applications online. The installation of free solar panels in 2.25 lakh households will be carried out according to the order in which registrations are received.
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship Central Government scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024. It aims to provide free electricity of up to 300 units per month to 1 crore, or 10 million, households across India by encouraging the installation of rooftop solar systems.
