Devotees from across the country thronged the Kamakhya Temple in Assam’s Guwahati on Saturday, ahead of the annual Ambubachi Mela, which will commence on June 22 and continue till June 26, temple priest Kabindra Prasad said.

The priest said the festival will begin at 9:08 pm on June 22, with special rituals marking the start of the annual observance dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. The temple will reopen for darshan after the conclusion of the concluding puja on June 26. Preparations for the event are being coordinated by the Mela Committee.

“The Ambubachi Mela this year will begin on June 22 at 9:08 PM. On June 26, after the special puja, darshan will be conducted for all devotees. The Mela Committee is handling all preparations collaboratively,” the Kamakhya Temple priest said.

The Ambubachi Mela is a four-day annual Hindu festival held at the historic Kamakhya Temple, celebrating the menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya. Often described as the “Mahakumbh of the East”, it symbolises fertility and challenges social taboos around womanhood.

During the festival, the sanctum remains closed for three days, believed to mark the Goddess’s annual cycle, with rituals and normal activities suspended. On the fourth day, the temple reopens, drawing thousands of devotees to Nilachal Hills for darshan.

Devotees visiting ahead of the festival expressed deep spiritual satisfaction and described a strong sense of positive energy at the shrine.

Vipul, a devotee from Hyderabad, said he felt a unique spiritual experience during his visit.

“The place is very energetic; I felt a different kind of energy here. The darshan was excellent, and there is a sense of fulfillment that one feels after visiting this place; it truly feels complete,” Vipul stated

Another devotee, Nandini Kaur, expressed hope for divine blessings.

“The darshan was wonderful, and I felt a great sense of peace here. My only prayer is that Mother Goddess fulfills everyone's wishes,” Kaur told ANI.
