Former minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Jaiswal has been re-elected as the president of Bihar BJP. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Bihar BJP Council in-charge and senior party leader Manohar Lal Khattar. This reappointment comes at a crucial political juncture, with Bihar set to hold Assembly elections in October-November 2025.
Resignation under 'One Person, One Post' policy
Jaiswal's re-election follows his recent resignation from the Nitish Kumar-led state cabinet. On February 26, Jaiswal stepped down as the Minister of Revenue and Land Reforms in adherence to the BJP’s 'one person, one post' policy.
He had been inducted into the cabinet in January 2023 after the BJP, in alliance with Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], returned to power in the state.
Jaiswal had previously succeeded Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary as Bihar BJP president in July 2023. His decision to resign from the ministerial post was made public shortly after BJP national president JP Nadda chaired a crucial meeting of the party’s state core committee in Patna on February 25.
While party leaders refrained from disclosing specifics of the discussions, they indicated that the deliberations primarily revolved around preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Following Jaiswal’s resignation, the Bihar cabinet is expected to be expanded, with new ministers scheduled to be sworn in at 4 pm at the Raj Bhavan, according to officials from the state’s Information and Public Relations Department.

Bihar assembly elections: A shifting political landscape
The Bihar Legislative Assembly elections for all 243 constituencies are set to take place in October-November 2025. The last Assembly elections, held in 2020, saw the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) securing victory and Nitish Kumar assuming the Chief Minister’s post. However, Bihar’s political landscape has undergone significant shifts since then.
In August 2022, Nitish Kumar severed ties with the BJP-led NDA and aligned with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan, forming a new coalition government. This partnership, however, proved short-lived. In January 2024, Kumar once again parted ways with the Mahagathbandhan and realigned with the BJP, bringing JD(U) back into the NDA fold.
With Jaiswal at the helm of Bihar BJP and the Assembly elections on the horizon, the party is expected to intensify its campaign strategy, aiming to consolidate its support base and counter opposition challenges effectively.
