The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Patna Regional Unit, has foiled a major cross-border charas smuggling attempt and seized over 31 kg of the contraband in Bihar’s East Champaran district.

Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted a motorcycle near Chapwa–Turkauliya Road in East Champaran. The vehicle was being ridden by a lone individual who was carrying a jute sack.

Upon search, the officers recovered 63 packets of a substance suspected to be charas. Subsequent testing with a field-testing kit confirmed the substance as charas.

During a detailed examination, the officers uncovered an ingenious and sophisticated smuggling method used for transporting the contraband across the border.

The motorcycle had been specially modified with a concealed cavity seamlessly integrated into the petrol tank. In addition, a discreet auxiliary fuelling system had been embedded within the seat to enable uninterrupted movement despite the altered fuel tank, indicating careful planning and technical expertise.

The seized charas weighed 31.097 kilograms and is estimated to be worth Rs. 77.74 lakh in the illicit market. The contraband, along with the motorcycle and other concealing materials, was seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The individual involved has been arrested, and further investigation is currently underway to trace the wider network behind the smuggling operation.

Officials noted that this seizure marks another significant success for DRI Patna in its sustained crackdown on narcotics trafficking in Bihar. In the ongoing financial year 2025–26, the unit has dealt a major blow to border-based charas syndicates through multiple operations, with total seizures amounting to 107 kilograms.

The operation underscores the DRI’s continued vigilance and commitment to dismantling organized drug trafficking networks operating along the Indo-Nepal border.
