The BJP MLA from Barsar, Indradutt Lakhanpal, on Friday alleged that the police was trying to damage his image after one of his relatives was arrested in a drug-related case.
Talking to mediapersons in Hamirpur, Lakhanpal stated that nearly 70 to 80 per cent of personnel in the police department are involved in the drug trade and said action should be taken against them as well.
He said it was completely wrong to link the BJP’s name with the accused, who is his relative.
Lakhanpal was among the six Congress MLAs who cross-voted in favour of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan during the Rajya Sabha elections in February 2024.
Following this, he was disqualified from the Assembly, later joined the BJP, and was re-elected in the by-elections.
A relative of the legislator was detained recently after police recovered chitta (adulterated heroin) from his possession.
Lakhanpal claimed that the Superintendent of Police in Hamirpur called people deliberately to make the news go viral and questioned the police’s working style.
Accusing the police of targeting him, he said they have limited their work to issuing challans instead of tackling serious crimes.
"This kind of working style of the police will not be tolerated," the MLA said. He questioned what steps the police were taking to curb the drug trade, alleging that in Barsar, both drug dealers and the liquor mafia operate openly day and night while the police remain silent.
Lakhanpal said if the police genuinely wants to eliminate the drug problem, everyone will cooperate. He further alleged that the police do not take action against the children of VIPs and said they should act honestly and fairly in such cases.
