A drug peddler managed to escape from police custody at the Kharar City police station late Tuesday night, prompting an overnight search operation by law enforcement officials.
The accused, identified as Tejveer, had been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act three days prior to the incident. Around 11 p.m., he slipped away from custody, triggering an immediate response from the police.
Following his escape, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kharar City swiftly organized multiple search teams to track him down. The manhunt continued throughout the night, culminating in Tejveer’s recapture late Wednesday morning.
Initially, two senior police officials denied that any such incident had taken place. However, they later confirmed the arrest while refraining from disclosing the identity of the accused.
In response to the escape, authorities took corrective measures at the Kharar City police station. One notable step was the deployment of an armed officer at the previously vacant sentry post near the station’s main gate, enhancing security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Punjab Police reported significant progress in its ongoing anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nashian Virudh.
As part of this statewide crackdown, authorities registered 988 FIRs under the NDPS Act and arrested 1,360 drug traffickers. Additionally, law enforcement agencies seized over 1,035 kg of heroin, opium, and other synthetic drugs, along with Rs 36 lakh in drug money.
