Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday arrested six drug peddlers and recovered more than 13 kg of charas from their possession in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said.
Officials described the operation as a major success in the ongoing crackdown against the drug menace carried out across the district in south Kashmir.
An FIR has been registered in five separate cases against the six peddlers following the recovery of a significant quantity of contraband substances, a police spokesperson confirmed.
Acting on credible intelligence about potential drug movement in the area, a police team from Police Station Srigufwara conducted a raid at the residence of Nisar Ahmad Nadaf, a resident of Dachigam Srigufwara, and recovered approximately two kg of a charas-like substance, he said.
In another incident, police arrested Adil Ahmad Mochi with 2 kg of charas at a naka checking at Shakras in Srigufwara. Officials said Aqib Ramzan Rather, a resident of Chatrasoo, was arrested at Pethnoo Crossing, Srigufwara, along with 2 kg of charas-like substance.
Besides, a rickshaw driver and his passenger, identified as Majid Akram Malik and Javeed Ahmad Dandroo, residents of Pandithpora Anchidoora and New Qazibagh, Anantnag, were arrested with 12 grams of heroin after being intercepted at Iqbal Market near Mill Mod, the spokesperson said.
Another accused, Sabzar Ahmad Rather, a resident of Waghama Rather Mohalla in K.V. Pora Marhama, was arrested while he was moving towards NH-44, the spokesperson said. During checking, approximately 7.854 kg of charas-like substance was recovered from a bag in his possession, the spokesperson added.
Further investigation is underway, he said. Strict action will be taken against persons involved in drug trade without any leniency, the spokesperson said. This comes days after LG Sinha warned drug syndicates operating in Kashmir that they must either give up the trade or face consequences.
