A man allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol hit four pedestrians at two different locations in Haldwani's Mukhani area on Sunday night. A woman sustained critical injuries in the incident, police said.
The accused, identified as Pankaj (45), a resident of Mukhani, was pulled out of the car and beaten up by angry locals before police reached the spot and rescued him.
According to police, Pankaj was driving from Unchapul towards the city via Kaladhungi Road when he first knocked down three pedestrians between the Mukhani and Kaladhungi intersections.
He then continued driving towards the Kalu Siddha Baba temple after crossing the Jail Road junction. There, he hit a woman who was walking along the roadside. The impact threw her several feet away.
People nearby rushed the injured woman to a hospital. Doctors said she remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
The car finally came to a stop after crashing into an electricity pole. Locals caught hold of the driver, dragged him out of the vehicle and assaulted him before police intervened.
A police team took the accused to the Kotwali police station after receiving information about the incident.
Kotwali Inspector Vijay Mehta said the driver's medical examination confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol. A case has been registered against him under the relevant sections of law, and further investigation is underway.
