According to the J&K Disaster Management Authority, the region falls under zone five, which makes it extremely vulnerable and prone to earthquakes.
The region has witnessed major natural disasters unfolding in the past, particularly due to topography, rugged terrain, extreme weather conditions and an underdeveloped economy.

Further, the NDMA lists several zones in the UT which are prone to earthquakes, including most parts of Kashmir Valley (15.3 per cent of the area), and Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar of the Jammu region fall under Seismic Zone V.

This very high-risk zone houses more than 50 per cent of the population of UT.

The rest of the UT and most parts of the Jammu Division (84.7 per cent of the total area of the UT) fall under the Seismic Zone IV.
