In a significant development ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission (EC) of India has published its twelfth — and final — supplementary voter list, revealing that more than 90 lakh names have been excluded from the state’s electoral rolls. The list, released late on Monday night, provides for the first time a detailed district-wise classification of voters who were previously marked under ‘pending adjudication,’ categorising them as either eligible or ineligible.
According to the Commission’s data, a total of 60,06,675 voters had initially been placed under the ‘pending adjudication’ category for further scrutiny. Following verification, 32,68,119 individuals have now been declared eligible, either as valid voters or newly enrolled names, and have been included in the updated rolls. Meanwhile, 27,16,393 individuals from this category have been deemed ineligible and excluded.
These latest exclusions add to the 63,66,952 names that had already been removed in the first final list published on February 28, taking the cumulative number of deletions to 90,83,345. The Commission further stated that the status of 59,84,512 out of the 60,06,675 ‘pending adjudication’ cases has now been resolved, accounting for approximately 99.6 percent of the total.
Only 22,163 cases remain pending as of now, with officials indicating that their status is expected to be resolved shortly. Despite their exclusion, the individuals declared ineligible retain the right to appeal before judicial tribunals, in line with directives issued by the Supreme Court.
District-wise analysis of the revised list shows that Murshidabad has recorded the highest number of exclusions, with approximately 4,55,000 names removed. North 24 Parganas follows with around 3,25,000 exclusions, while Malda accounts for nearly 2,39,000.
Significant deletions have also been reported from Nadia, where about 2,08,000 names have been struck off, and South 24 Parganas, with nearly 2,22,000 exclusions. Other districts include Birbhum with around 82,000 deletions, Hooghly with approximately 1,20,000, West Bardhaman with about 74,000, and North Dinajpur where roughly 1,76,000 names have been excluded.
Sources within the Commission stated that each case was individually examined through a comprehensive verification process before arriving at the final decision. The supplementary list published on April 6 is being treated, for now, as the final revision of the electoral rolls.
As per the Commission’s regulations, the voter list for the first phase of polling in the Assembly elections was frozen at midnight on April 6. For the second phase, scheduled to be held on April 29, the voter list is set to be frozen at midnight on April 9, marking the final cut-off for any further revisions.
