With the first phase of voting for the West Bengal Assembly Elections scheduled for April 23, authorities have imposed stringent restrictions on the movement of motorbikes across the state, effective immediately. The directive, issued by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in line with guidelines from the Election Commission, aims to curb the use of so-called “bike brigades” and ensure a safe and orderly environment for voters.

According to the notification, no bike rallies or motorcycle processions will be allowed from 48 hours prior to the commencement of polling.

Additionally, the movement of motorbikes has been completely prohibited between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am during this period. However, exemptions may be granted in cases of medical emergencies or urgent family situations.

The order further states that during the two days preceding the election, carrying a pillion rider on a motorbike will not be permitted between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Exceptions have been made for school students and patients.

On the day of polling, between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm, pillion riding will be allowed only for traveling to polling stations with family members or in cases of urgent necessity.

Officials clarified that individuals seeking exemptions for specific purposes must obtain prior written permission from their respective local police stations.

The district administration and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to enforce these measures strictly. Authorities have also begun spreading awareness about the new rules through social media and other communication channels to ensure public compliance.

The move comes as part of broader efforts by the Election Commission to maintain law and order and facilitate free, fair, and peaceful polling across West Bengal.
