The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted search operations at six locations in Ludhiana and Jalandhar in Punjab, along with simultaneous raids in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and the Delhi-Noida region.
The raids were carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of an ongoing investigation into Hampton Sky Realty Ltd.
According to officials, the searches targeted residential and business premises linked to Municipal Corporation contractor Amit Bajaj in New Jawahar Nagar, Jalandhar. His elder brother, Inderjit Bajaj, was also reportedly under scrutiny.
The Bajaj brothers are said to have major contracts with municipal corporations in Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. They are also reportedly involved in running manpower outsourcing societies.
Sources claimed that Amit Bajaj had funded several programmes of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and was considered close to the party's top leadership.
Prior to the AAP coming to power in Punjab, the brothers were also reportedly close to leaders of previous ruling parties.
Reacting to the raids, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said the ED was once again targeting traders in Punjab. He urged traders not to panic and assured them that the AAP-led Punjab government stood firmly with them.
