Jammu and Kashmir will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on May 27 after the crescent moon was sighted on May 17, the region’s Grand Mufti, Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, said. He announced the date after receiving testimonies of crescent moon sighting from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir after sunset on Sunday.
On Monday, he said Eid-ul-Adha would be celebrated on May 27 later this month.
According to the Grand Mufti, the decision was taken after proper verification of testimonies received from various parts of the Union Territory. He said Jammu and Kashmir has a full-fledged Ruet-e-Hilal committee which functions during important Islamic months every year to decide on the day and dates of religious festivals.
He also urged people to pay their Zakat (the Islamic tax paid to poor sections) on time and show empathy to them by offering financial assistance to the underprivileged.
Eid-ul-Adha is one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar, which is celebrated to mark the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage every year. A main ritual of Eid is that Muslims who are financially capable and have no dues on them can offer an animal sacrifice. The meat is then distributed among neighbours, relatives, and the needy, while a portion is kept by the family, encouraging community service.
