Police officials in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district have arrested eight people allegedly involved in vandalism during protests against the sexual abuse and harassment of a girl student by a lecturer, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to officials, a senior lecturer at a government higher secondary school in Sopore was booked on charges of sexually assaulting a female student on Monday. The allegation triggered fierce protests by the students, during which ‘Sopore Police arrested 8 miscreants involved in vandalism’.
“More than 25 people have been identified. Strict action is underway against those disturbing public order,” police officials wrote on X. A senior police officer later also confirmed, “We have registered a case against lecturer Ghulam Hassan Mir based on a sexual assault complaint against him.”
Students began protesting after allegations of sexual abuse by a girl student against the lecturer surfaced on Monday, but the situation was largely peaceful before the protest turned violent on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, taking note of the situation, the Director of the Education Department has placed Mir under suspension and ordered a departmental inquiry against him.
The Joint Director (North Kashmir) of the department has been appointed as the enquiry officer in the case and he is expected to submit a report within 15 days, the officer added.
