A wild elephant trampled two individuals to death in the Lalkuan area of Nainital district in Uttarakhand, according to forest officials on Wednesday. Officials said the incident took place on Tuesday night in the Shah Pathani area under the Tanda range of the Terai Central Forest Division. Both victims died on the spot after the attack.
Forest department and police teams rushed to the location after receiving information. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination. The incident has created panic among residents of nearby villages.
One of the victims has been identified as Bandho Prajapati (75), a native of Jharkhand who was working as a watchman in nearby agricultural fields. The identity of the second victim is yet to be confirmed.
Divisional Forest Officer Umesh Chandra Tiwari, along with senior administrative and police officials, visited the spot and began an inquiry into the incident. Lalkuan SDM Rekha Kohli said the process to provide compensation to the families of the deceased has been initiated as per government norms.
She added that forest department teams have been instructed to increase patrolling in villages and forest-fringe areas to prevent any further untoward incidents.
