In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old engineering student was killed and four others sustained serious injuries after an unexploded rocket-like object detonated near a firing practice zone in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu district on Monday evening.
The incident took place in the foothills of Anumanthapuram village, close to a training zone used by multiple security forces, including the police, the army, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The area is known for regular weapons training exercises such as firing drills and rocket launching.
According to police, five students from SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Kattankulathur had gone trekking on the hill on April 13. While descending the cliff, they noticed a rocket-like object lying at the foothill. Out of curiosity, they began handling it, when it suddenly exploded with a powerful blast.
Emanshu Yadav, a fourth-year engineering student from Bengaluru, died on the spot. The other four students—identified as Vishal Venugopal (Hyderabad), Aryan Sharma (Uttar Pradesh), Krishna Siraj Mahajan (Jammu), and Niskas Viraj (Delhi)—were critically injured and collapsed at the scene.
Local villagers, alerted by the explosion, rushed to the spot and informed the police. Teams from Maraimalai Nagar and Singaperumal Koil reached the location and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Yadav’s body was later sent to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway under the supervision of the Guduvancheri Deputy Commissioner of Police. Preliminary findings indicate that the object may have been an unexploded rocket left behind after a training exercise in the nearby firing range.
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety protocols in areas adjacent to defence training zones, particularly regarding the handling and disposal of unexploded ordnance.
