Incarcerated Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Engineer Rashid, was on Monday granted interim bail by the court to attend his father’s funeral and perform the last rites in his hometown.
His father, Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, following a prolonged illness. The 85-year-old was undergoing treatment at several hospitals in Srinagar before being referred to AIIMS, New Delhi, for advanced care.
A party spokesperson said on Monday that preparations for the last rites of the MP’s father are underway at his residence. He also confirmed that Er Rashid is set to arrive at Srinagar airport at 4 pm on Monday.
Political leaders across Jammu and Kashmir have expressed condolences to Engineer Rashid and his party cadre.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep grief over the passing away of the father of MP Engineer Rashid and MLA Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh, who breathed his last at AIIMS, New Delhi. The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for peace for the departed soul. He also prayed for strength and courage for the family to bear this irreparable loss.
PDP leader Waheed Para expressed anguish over Er Rashid’s absence during his father’s final moments. In a post on X, he wrote: “They say the personal is political, but in Kashmir, the political becomes heartbreak itself. Rashid’s father carried both pride and pain, pride in a son who rose despite everything, and pain in never having him near during his final moments. Some prisons are built with walls; others are built with distance, helplessness, and the cruelty of being unable to say goodbye.”
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also expressed grief on X, saying: “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of Engineer Rashid sahib’s father. The pain of losing a parent is devastating, and I pray to Allah SWT to give the family patience and strength in this difficult time. May Allah give him the highest place in heaven.”
