Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, former Khunti Member of Parliament and Padma Bhushan awardee Kariya Munda has received an extortion threat from an unidentified person impersonating a police officer, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident marks first time the 80-year-old tribal leader has been targeted in such a manner. His personal assistant, Dr Nirmal Singh, said repeated calls were made from mobile number 8208746581 to Munda’s phone number 9431108685, during which the caller claimed to be a police official and demanded money while issuing threats.
Dr Singh shared details of the incident on social media platform X, tagging the police and the Chief Minister’s Office. He said Munda is currently unwell and that the threatening calls have caused him mental distress. He urged the authorities to take strict action against those involved.
Confirming the matter, Superintendent of Police Manish Toppo said an FIR has been registered at the Ranchi Cyber Police Station based on the complaint lodged by Dr Singh. He added that a detailed investigation is underway and the accused will be arrested soon.
Police said they are conducting a thorough probe into the cybercrime case. Kariya Munda is a senior BJP leader and has previously served as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, besides representing Khunti as a Member of Parliament.
