Hamirpur Police have apprehended two persons for their alleged involvement in a counterfeit currency racket, officials said on Saturday. The arrests were made following a complaint by a 74-year-old shopkeeper from Loharda Bypass Road, who was cheated on April 9, 2026. The accused allegedly used a “currency exchange” trick by giving fake Rs 200 notes in return for genuine Rs 500 notes.
Using CCTV footage, technical surveillance, inputs from the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) and bank transaction records, police identified the vehicle used in the crime.
On Friday, the police intercepted the suspects near Behnajata in Bilaspur district while they were travelling in another vehicle. During the search, officers recovered 16 counterfeit Rs 500 notes and 33 counterfeit Rs 200 notes from their possession.
Superintendent of Police Hamirpur Balbir Singh said initial probe revealed that the accused had been moving across different parts of Himachal Pradesh in recent days, targeting small shopkeepers and elderly citizens.
A case has been registered under relevant Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The arrested accused are residents of Punjab.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the accused as further investigation is underway to establish backward and forward linkages of the racket. Hamirpur Police have appealed to the public, especially small shopkeepers, to remain alert and carefully check security features of currency notes during transactions.
The police added that anyone having information about such activities or victims of similar frauds may contact the Office of the SP Hamirpur or Sadar Police Station Hamirpur.
