National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday strongly condemned the US and Israel for launching airstrikes on Iran and denounced the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir stated that no country has the right to impose its will on another nation or violate its sovereignty. Dr Farooq urged the Union government to clearly present its position on the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.
“Iran is an independent country. America attacked it; that is wrong. It is wrong to invade any other country. No country has the right to impose its control over another nation. They have done it with Venezuela too. It is unfortunate,” he said.
He warned that the war could escalate into a broader regional conflict, given efforts by major world powers to isolate Iran, and cautioned that the current hostilities might even trigger a World War III.
“It may lead to something bigger, and in the end it can start a Third World War. We do not know about it,” he said, stressing that the situation must be handled with utmost responsibility. While acknowledging the widespread anger among Muslims over Khamenei’s killing, Dr Farooq emphasised that protests must remain peaceful. “Muslims have anger. Protests should take place, but they should be peaceful,” he added.
The Kashmir Valley has witnessed protests in recent days against the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli strikes.
