Uttar Pradesh's final voter list will now be published on April 10, instead of the original March 6 deadline, following a decision by the Election Commission to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) schedule. Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said that this extension was granted after political parties urged more time for sorting out claims and objections during a meeting in late January. In this regard, the window available for voters to submit applications for adding, deletion, or correction of names is extended until March 6.
The massive revision exercise, which kicked off last October, has seen an unprecedented influx of applications. Following the publication of the draft roll on January 6, officials received over 37.8 lakh applications for name additions just between January 6 and February 4, with a record-breaking 3.5 lakh applications filed on February 5 alone. Rinwa noted that overall, millions of forms for additions and deletions have poured in, signalling high public participation.
Alongside the general revision, the state is undertaking a complex parallel project to address mapping discrepancies against the 2003 electoral roll. It involves sorting out more than 3.26 crore cases of logical errors, including mismatches in parentage and age variations. It further stated that although notices have already been served to millions, the CEO said adequate time was still left for sorting out these issues and the deadline for disposing of these notices has been extended up to March 27.
To ensure no one is left behind, booth-level officers will be available at polling stations on all working days between 10 am and noon to help citizens verify their status, particularly those whose records may have discrepancies. The draft roll is also accessible online, and copies have been provided to all recognised political parties to assist in the verification process.
