A fire broke out in Chandigarh’s Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, during the early hours of Tuesday, causing minor damage. No one was injured in the incident. The situation was quickly brought under control, preventing any major damage or disruption to services.
The incident was detected by on-duty staff, who immediately alerted security personnel. The security team responded swiftly and extinguished the fire before it could spread to other departments.
Senior hospital authorities, including the Director of Health Services (DHS), Medical Superintendent (MS), Deputy Medical Superintendent (DMS), and the In Charge of the Blood Bank, rushed to the site and reviewed the situation.
They immediately directed the staff and security personnel to safeguard the premises and ensure continuity of essential blood bank operations.
According to a preliminary assessment, the fire was likely caused by a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit installed in the blood bank. The affected area was quickly secured and precautionary measures were taken.
No loss of life or injuries were reported. There was also no significant damage to blood stocks, equipment, records, or infrastructure.
Officials have now initiated a detailed inspection of the unit to determine the exact cause of the fire and recommend further preventive measures.
