Five people, including a five-year-old boy and his father from Hyderabad, drowned in the Tungabhadra River near Mantralayam village in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday evening. The victims were identified as Yuvan Chandra (5) and his father Vadla Satish (35) from Hyderabad, along with Raghavendra (28) and Vadla Dhanu (22) from Mantralayam village, and Sandhya (22) from Uravakonda. Their bodies were recovered after several hours of coordinated search operations involving police, local administration officials, and fishermen.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred after the group had visited the riverbank following participation in a Satyanarayana Puja at a relative’s residence in Mantralayam. While playing near the river, young Yuvan reportedly slipped into deeper waters. In an attempt to save him, his father and other relatives entered the river one after another. However, strong currents and sudden depth changes reportedly overwhelmed them.
One woman, identified as Aparna, managed to survive and escape the water. She later raised an alarm, prompting immediate rescue efforts by local police, fire services, and trained swimmers. Boats were deployed as search operations continued late into the night before all five bodies were recovered.
Andhra Pradesh District In-charge Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu and Industries Minister TG Bharat expressed deep condolences over the deaths and directed local authorities to closely monitor the situation and ensure all necessary support to the bereaved families.
Authorities have urged visitors to exercise caution near riverbanks, especially in areas with unpredictable currents, as investigations into the circumstances of the accident continue.
