The death toll from rain-triggered flash floods and landslides in the Jammu region rose to 26 on Thursday. The latest recovery was that of a 25-year-old woman from Poonch district, officials said.
The body of Khalida Kouser, wife of Yasar Iqbal and a resident of Murrah village, was found near the Fazalabad footbridge in Surankote during a search operation. She was swept away in the flash floods that hit the area on the night of July 18, officials said.
Officials said the body was in a decomposed condition and was taken to the Sub-District Hospital in Surankote. Village lambardar Zakir Hussain identified the body. After completing the required formalities, it was handed over to the family for the last rites.
With the recovery, the death toll in Poonch has reached 17, the highest among the affected districts. The total number of deaths in the Jammu region has now risen to 26, officials said.
Across Jammu and Kashmir, 29 people have died in rain-related incidents. Of these, two deaths were reported from Bandipora and one from Budgam in the Kashmir Valley.
Among those killed in the flash floods in Murrah hamlet on July 18 were 59-year-old Noor Safia, wife of Mohd Latief; 16-year-old Sajad Ahmed; 11-year-old Haqnawaz Ahmed; 11-year-old Shahnawaz Ahmed; 25-year-old Khalida Kouser, wife of Yasar Iqbal; and her two-year-old grandchild Sofian. Bano Bi, wife of Mohd Hussain, 60, and seven-year-old Mohd Akram, son of Mohd Liaqat, also lost their lives.
Officials said rescue teams are continuing their search efforts, with six people still reported missing.
