Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday urged the Central government to speak with students protesting over the paper leak issue. He said their concerns should be heard instead of being ignored.
Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement about setting up fast-track courts for paper leak cases, Omar said the government should sit down with the protesting students and listen to them. He said it was not right to ignore such a large number of young people.
Speaking about the protests in Delhi, Abdullah said the demonstrations had grown over time. He also claimed that tear gas was used near Jantar Mantar on Wednesday night.
He said the protests had started with a small gathering at Jantar Mantar, which some people had mocked. However, the situation has now changed, with large parts of New Delhi affected by the demonstrations. He also alleged that tear gas was used near Jantar Mantar the previous night.
Omar said many young people are upset and feel that their concerns have not been taken seriously. He welcomed the Prime Minister's statement about the importance of the youth and said talking directly to students could be a positive step.
He said it was encouraging that the Prime Minister had acknowledged the importance of young people. Abdullah added that the government should now engage with students and discuss the issues they are raising.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said those responsible for putting the future of young people at risk would face strict action. He also said the authorities had been instructed to take all necessary steps to address the issue.
In a post on X, Modi said the government had decided to establish fast-track courts to ensure quick and strict punishment for those involved in paper leaks. He said the move was part of the government's efforts to protect the interests and future of students.
