Forces recover ₹35 lakh cash hidden by Maoists in Jharkhand

Police sources indicated that the Maoists had hidden the cash to fund the procurement of explosives and for planting landmines as part of their sabotage activities.

According to officials, the money — divided into 35 bundles — had been placed inside a steel container, carefully wrapped in layers of paper and plastic.

In a major breakthrough during anti-Maoist operations, security personnel recovered approximately ₹35 lakh in cash, allegedly belonging to Maoist insurgents, from the Saranda forests within the jurisdiction of the Karaikela police station in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. Acting on credible intelligence inputs suggesting a significant sum of money was buried underground, a joint team comprising personnel from Jharkhand Jaguar and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted a targeted operation in the area.

Police sources indicated that the Maoists had hidden the cash to fund the procurement of explosives and for planting landmines as part of their sabotage activities.

Inspector General of Police Manoj Kaushik confirmed the recovery via a post on social media platform X. “Based on specific inputs regarding Maoist funding, the Chaibasa police recovered nearly ₹35 lakh on July 27. The final count will be done at the police station. The amount was intended for purchasing explosives to mine the area against security forces,” he stated.

According to officials, the money — divided into 35 bundles — had been placed inside a steel container, carefully wrapped in layers of paper and plastic, and then buried underground. The exact sum will be verified after counting the bundles at the station.

This isn’t the first significant seizure in recent months. In May, during a coordinated inter-state crackdown on the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit, forces discovered two steel almirahs and a large stockpile of ammunition in the Chakarbandha forest along the Jharkhand-Bihar border.

The almirahs, believed to have been used to store extorted funds from contractors and traders, were found empty. Authorities suspect the cash was recently removed, possibly by close aides of slain Maoist leader Sandeep Yadav.
