President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said that MLAs are the most vital link between the government and the people. She told them to rise above party politics and work with sincerity for the development and welfare of all, particularly for the underprivileged. She was speaking at a special session held to mark the silver jubilee of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly.

Murmu said that Legislative Assemblies were a key pillar of India’s parliamentary democracy. She stated that the Constitution makers placed special importance on accountability within these institutions.

The President said being an MLA was a great privilege as it allowed one to connect directly with the people and serve them at the grassroots.

Drawing from her own experience as an MLA, she said, “If MLAs remain actively engaged in solving public problems and working for people's welfare with a spirit of service, the bond of trust between the people and their representatives will remain unbreakable.” She called upon the legislators to move beyond party lines and dedicate themselves fully to development and welfare.

Murmu emphasised that creating more opportunities for the younger generation should be a top priority for lawmakers.

Congratulating Uttarakhand on completing 25 years, the President recalled that the state was created during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She said Uttarakhand has made remarkable progress in many sectors over the past two and a half decades, including environment, tourism, health, education, energy, and connectivity, which has improved its overall Human Development Index.

The President praised the state’s efforts toward empowering women. She expressed hope that Uttarakhand would continue its proud legacy of producing strong and inspiring women such as activist Sushila Baluni, mountaineer Bachendri Pal, Chipko leader Gaura Devi, environmentalist Radha Bhatt, and hockey player Vandana Kataria.

Murmu commended the Uttarakhand Assembly for appointing Ritu Khanduri Bhushan as its first woman Speaker. She said more women should be encouraged to enter politics and that all stakeholders should work to increase their representation in the Assembly.

The President said Uttarakhand had always been known as the land of spirituality and bravery. She added that the youth of the state take pride in joining the armed forces and serving the nation with dedication.

Murmu lauded the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly for implementing the Uniform Civil Code. She also mentioned important legislations like the Uttarakhand Lokayukta Bill, the Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Bill, and the Anti-Copying Bill among the more than 550 bills passed by the House so far.

Speaking about Uttarakhand’s natural beauty and rich resources, she said the state must continue its journey of progress while preserving its environment and ecological balance.

Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan, Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya, and MLAs were present on the occasion.
