Police have apprehended four individuals linked to a crash during an alleged racing incident in the Rajpur Road area that led to the death of a bike taxi passenger, officials said on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Pranjal Ramola (22), Abhishek Badoni (21), Lokendra alias Lokesh Bijalwan (22), all residents of Uttarkashi, and Sumit Rathauri (22) from Dehradun.

The accident took place on Friday night near Aketa Hotel on Rajpur Road. Police said the accused were allegedly racing their motorcycles and trying to overtake each other at high speed.

According to the police, the victim, Ankit Pal, was travelling as a passenger on a Rapido bike taxi when the motorcycle was hit by two other bikes. The collision caused Pal and the bike taxi rider to fall on the road, leaving them seriously injured. They were rushed to Doon Hospital for treatment, where Pal was declared brought dead. After the incident, a case was registered on Saturday following a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, Usha Pal.

Police said CCTV footage from the area showed that after the first motorcycle hit the victim’s bike, another motorcycle coming from behind ran over Pal while he was lying on the road.

During questioning, the accused admitted they were racing against each other and trying to get ahead, a police officer said. He added that the pillion riders were also encouraging the riders to speed up. The officer said the crash occurred due to excessive speed and poor visibility near the hotel area. The accused have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for overspeeding on a busy public road.
