Fresh floods, landslides hit Arunachal; over 94,000 affected

Fresh spells of heavy rain have triggered floods and landslides across Arunachal Pradesh, affecting more than 94,200 people in 26 districts. Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations as the IMD forecasts more heavy rainfall over the coming days.

Fresh spells of heavy rainfall have triggered floods and landslides across several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, affecting more than 94,200 people and causing extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture and public utilities, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

 

The latest SEOC report said the ongoing monsoon has affected 94,200 people across 333 villages in 237 circles covering 26 districts. Upper Siang remains the worst-affected district, followed by Siang and Kra Daadi, with continuous rainfall disrupting normal life.

 

In the past 24 hours alone, Changlang witnessed heavy rain, flooding and a landslide, while Upper Subansiri reported two flood incidents and three landslides. Upper Siang recorded as many as 16 landslides, while a rain-triggered rockfall was reported from East Kameng, highlighting the widespread impact of the continuing downpour.

 

The monsoon has claimed four lives in the state so far. One person was killed in a landslide at Sarti village in Anjaw district on June 28, while three others died in a flash flood at Possa in Keyi Panyor district. The disaster has also left 21 people injured, while two women remain missing, prompting ongoing search operations.

Rescue and relief efforts are underway in the affected districts, with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army, the Air Force and other state agencies deployed to assist stranded residents and restore connectivity.

 

The heavy rainfall has caused extensive damage to agriculture, with 334.2 hectares of crop area affected, including 185.5 hectares under horticulture and 148.7 hectares under agriculture. Nearly 1,010 hectares of forest area have also suffered damage.

 

Public infrastructure has been hit hard, with damage reported to 131 roads, 19 bridges, 21 culverts, 191 water supply systems, 58 government buildings, 21 power lines, 224 electric poles, four hydel projects, seven flood protection walls, two hospitals and three schools. Hundreds of houses have also been damaged in different parts of the state.

 

Two relief camps remain operational in Keyi Panyor district, sheltering 252 displaced people.

 

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh over the next few days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected in several districts, including Lohit, Changlang, Tirap, Lower Dibang Valley, Namsai, Upper Subansiri, Lower Siang and Longding, with authorities urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as the monsoon activity persists.
