Northern India is seeing a big change in weather. Many areas are experiencing snowfall, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and a sharp drop in temperatures.
The higher regions of Himachal Pradesh, including Rohtang Pass and the Dhauladhar ranges, received fresh snowfall on Monday morning. This marks the start of winter. Icy winds swept through the mid and higher hills, bringing temperatures down drastically.
Orange alert in Himachal
Districts like Shimla, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti are under an orange alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Warnings include heavy to very heavy rain, hailstorms, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
Traffic to Rohtang Pass has been stopped. The Kullu administration has asked tourists and locals to avoid unnecessary travel.
Heavy rainfall in Punjab, Haryana
Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh also received rainfall on Monday. Moderate to heavy rain may continue on Tuesday as well. Farmers have been asked to take precautions to protect their crops from possible hail damage.
Heavy rains, school closed in J&K
Srinagar saw heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in many areas. Following IMD’s warning, the Jammu division has closed all government and private schools from October 6 to 7.
Earlier, intense rainfall in Rajouri led to landslides, damaged homes and roads, and disrupted daily life. Authorities are keeping a close watch on landslide-prone areas. The Vaishno Devi Yatra has been suspended from October 5 to 7 due to the bad weather.
West Bengal
Bengal, especially Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri, faced severe landslides and flooding due to nonstop rain over the weekend. At least 23 people have died. Rescue and relief work is ongoing.
Rain brings relief, air quality moderate in Delhi-NCR
Delhi and nearby areas saw light to moderate rain on Monday. The rain brought relief from the hot and humid weather. Maximum temperature fell to about 29°C, down from Sunday’s 34.1°C.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) was 117, which is “moderate.” Thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected to continue through the day.
