The Ghatshila Assembly bye-election in Jharkhand is set to witness a bi-polar contest again as both the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded their candidates today.
The BJP named former CM Champai Soren’s son Babulal Soren again, while the JMM announced the name of Somesh Soren. In a meeting of the party’s central committee, it was unanimously decided to field Somesh Soren as the party nominee.
Somesh is the son of the ex-minister and former Ghatshila MLA Late Ramdas Soren, whose recent demise led to the vacancy of the seat.
The decision was taken in the presence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, with the party leadership emphasising that Somesh enjoys strong public support in the region and is capable of carrying forward his father’s political legacy.
In the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections, late Ramdas Soren had secured 98,356 votes, while Babulal Soren received 75,910 votes. According to the Election Commission’s schedule, polling for the Ghatshila Assembly by-election will be held on November 11, and the counting of votes will take place on November 14. The last date for filing nominations is October 21, and October 24 is the deadline for withdrawal of nominations.
The Ghatshila Assembly constituency falls under East Singhbhum district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). The total number of registered voters in the constituency is 2,55,823.
