Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday attended the Congress general house and political affairs committee meeting at Rajiv Bhawan, stating that the government and the party organisation were functioning in close coordination.
Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the meeting, Sukhu said he had come to take part in discussions of the political affairs committee and stressed that both the government and the party organisation were functioning in close coordination.
He said the meeting would also discuss the upcoming Panchayat elections. He added that since these elections are not fought on party symbols, the party would not stop any worker from contesting the polls.
Taking a dig at the BJP over the women’s reservation amendment bill, the Chief Minister alleged that the BJP was trying to gain political advantage by introducing the legislation without carrying out delimitation.
He said women’s reservation should not be turned into a political issue and reiterated that the Congress has time after time worked towards strengthening the rights and participation of women.
Referring to earlier initiatives, the Chief Minister said during the tenure of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, women were given reservation in Panchayati Raj institutions through the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. He further said the party, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, had also moved forward the women’s reservation bill in Parliament.
Sukhu maintained that the Congress party’s position on women’s reservation remained clear and that it will continue to strongly advocate its stand on the matter. The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026 were introduced and taken up for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
